CARMELITES OF MARY IMMACULATE (C.M.I.)
The Congregation of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (C.M.I.) had its beginning in the
first half of the last century. Thomas Palackal, Thomas Porukara and B. Kuriakose Elias
Chavara, Priests of the Apostolic Church of St. Thomas Christians (Syro-Malabar Church)
were its founding fathers. In 1829, when Father Thomas Palackal and Father Thomas
Porukara, sought to live in retirement and prayer, their ordinary the Vicar Apostolic, of
Verapoly, Bishop Maurilius Stabilini, advised them to found a religious house. B.
Kuriakose Elias Chavara, shared the aspirations of the two Fathers and associated himself
in the foundation of the religious community.
On May 11, 1831, a small house was started at Mannanam near Kottayam (Kerala), and a
small religious community took shape. On December 8, 1855, the Religious Congregation was
canonically erected, and B. Chavara, the only surviving founder, was appointed the first
Superior of the Congregation.
