New book on St Teresa of Jesus
We point this book out because of the prestige the author
enjoys and because of the content of the book, a mine of
teaching material. Written by Fr
Tomás
Álvarez,
ocd, it is called "Cien
fichas
sobre santa Teresa".
It forms part of the
‘Para aprender y
enseñar’ collection
published by our Editorial Monte
Carmelo, Burgos. It consists of 240 pages in folio
format. Each section occupies two folio-pages. Its interest
lies in the exhaustive information on St Teresa: 30 sections
on the historical context; 30 on her work as a
foundress and writer; 30 on her
written output; and 10 final sections on her doctorate. As a
whole it is a basic formation manual for someone aspiring to
the Teresian lifestyle in
today’s context and cultures. It would be very handy, for
example, in the Carmels, not
only for the use of the mistress of novices, but also for
the Teresian formation of young
vocations.
News from the Republic of Central Africa
A circular letter received this summer from Fr Marcello
Bartolomei tells us about what
is happening among the Carmelites in this Republic where a
mission is entrusted to the Genoa-Liguria Province. First of
all we note the fervour and participation of Secular Carmel
and the other faithful in the celebration of the solemnity
of Our Lady of Mt Carmel, and in the preparatory novena. The
Secular Carmelites made use of this for their annual
retreat. August is the time for the admission course of our
minor seminary in Bouar-La
Yolé. From the 80 youths so far
from our missionary parishes of Bouar,
Baoró,
Bozoum and Bangui, 20 have passed the admission test.
At the conclusion of their secondary studies, 3 young men
entered the novitiate. Brothers Mesmin
and Daniel are now ordained deacons and Fr.
Arland became the fourth
Carmelite priest on the Mission. Fr Marcello
Bartolomei was reconfirmed as
Spiritual Assistant of Families and of the Catholic Women.
Our house in Bouar-Saint
Élie continues as a retreat
house for days of prayer and reflection for various types of
people.
These signs of hope contrast with the situation of political
aggravation in the country. Insecurity and violence worsen.
Soldiers of the presidential guard set fire to whole
villages, such as happened at
Ngaoundaye. Kidnaping for
extorting money is on the increase. Hostages are in the
hundreds, maltreated or assassinated. People are escaping
from the villages to take refuge in cities with their
greater population. In Bozoum
there are already 7,000 displaced people given that
government of the State has totally collapsed. The area most
affected and dangerous lies between
Bouar and Bozoum. Yet
once again the Mission continues on ahead with sacrifice,
sweat and risk, thanks to the courage and confidence of our
Brothers.
Meeting in Brazil on the Aparecida
document
Pope Benedict XVI graced with his presence the General
Assembly of the Latin American Episcopate, held in
Aparecida, Brazil. This meeting
continued on with the reflection begun in
Río de Janeiro,
Medellín,
Puebla and Santo Domingo. Now the Latin American
Carmel is organizing its own meeting to study deeply the
Church’s message in Aparecida.
It will be directed by the Teresian
Family in Latin America: Friars and Nuns, Secular Carmel,
affiliated Institutes and associated laity.
It will be held from 16th to 19th
October in the “Mount Carmel” Spirituality Centre in
Londrina, which lies in the
Brazilian State of Paraná. The
Definitor General, Fr
Nicolás
García will give the address of welcome to the
participants. Orlando
Brandes, Archbishop of
Londrina, will speak on “Central
Points of Aparecida. Pastoral
Challenges”. On the “Biblical and Theological Perspectives
of Aparecida”, Fr Carlos
Mesters,
Ocarm., will give a dissertation.
Agenor
Briguenti has selected as his topic, “Historical
Perspectives of the CELAM Assemblies”. The contribution from
Fr Camilo
Maccise will deal with “Religious Life and the
Spirituality of Aparicida”.
Finally, Sr
Vilma Moreira will bring
the lectures to a close by speaking about “Women and the
Laity”. The word Aparecida
is also used to speak about the final document issued by the
Aparecida meeting.
